Join your library to hear about the true story of Eliza Winston and how she found freedom and escaped slavery in Minnesota as chronicled in Dr. Lehman's book "It Took Courage."

In 1860, Eliza Winston secured her freedom through a legal appeal after escaping enslavement in Minnesota. In “It Took Courage: Eliza Winston's Quest for Freedom,” author Christopher P. Lehman sets the record straight, separating fact from fiction and showcasing Eliza Winston’s remarkable battle for freedom. Join your library to hear from the author about his process writing the book, methods of research and get an overview of the people and places involved in Eliza Winston’s enslavement and how slavery existed in Minnesota in the time of Eliza's captivity.

Admission is free thanks in part to funding from the Minnesota Arts & Cultural Heritage Fund.
